Spellings

Strong spelling skills are part of the foundation of good reading and writing. To support our students, we use a combined approach that draws on both Phonics and Morphology.

Phonics teaches students the relationship between sounds and the letters that represent them. Through daily phonics practice, students learn to hear the sounds in words, blend them together, and link them to their written form. This gives them the tools to spell words accurately and decode new ones independently.

Morphology focuses on the structure of words and how they are built from meaningful parts, such as prefixes, suffixes, and root words. By exploring these word parts, children begin to understand spelling patterns, word families, and how words connect to one another. This not only improves spelling but also enriches vocabulary and comprehension.

Together, phonics and morphology give our pupils a deeper understanding of the English language. They learn not just to spell words but also to understand why words are spelled the way they are. This approach helps students to become confident, curious, and capable learners who can apply their knowledge across all areas of the curriculum.
